The undersigned civil society organizations and individuals express their concern over the judicial proceedings brought against Mr. Yasser Abbas (“Abu Wasim”), spokesperson for the Association for the Repeal of Decree 66, and the engineer Ibrahim Sheikh al-Shabab, representative of the Mezzeh Residents’ Committees, in connection with their public activity related to Legislative Decree No. 66 of 2012 and to the objections raised by affected residents against the Damascus Governorate’s approach to the file of compensation and reparation.

The undersigned Syrian civil society organisations and international and regional organisations welcome the renewal of the mandate of the International Commission of Inquiry on Syria at the 61st Session of the Human Rights Council. We underscore the continued importance of the Commission’s investigations, public reporting, and efforts to support accountability, which remain critical, and call for sustained support to ensure the effective implementation of the mandate.

The Syrian organizations signing this statement strongly condemn the repeated detention of civilians traveling to and from areas in Northeast Syria at military checkpoints operated by the Syrian Interim Government. This practice constitutes a serious violation of the fundamental rights of the population, foremost among them freedom of movement, physical safety, non-discrimination, privacy, and the protection of personal data.
